The process of metal recycling is a mystery to most people. You toss your aluminum can in the recycling bin and forget about it! Sure, maybe it comes back several years later, recycles and resurrected as a new soda can, but you don’t know how that happens. And what about recycling massive things like automobiles or old machinery? It is an interesting process, and one we will cover in today’s blog.
The first step in the recycling process is collections. Scrap metal is brought in by individuals from all over the city to Arizona Recycles.
Next comes sorting. Different types of scrap metal need to be sorted and separated from each other. Some scrap metal recycling facilities handle radioactive scrap. It is during this process that any radioactive scrap material is separated from all the rest.
After sorting comes shearing. The machines that perform the shearing are immensely powerful. They have to be to cut through tough scrap metal. These massive hydraulic powered cutters reduce large scrap metal into smaller, more manageable pieces.
Now it is time to reduce the scrap metal even further! The is the shredding process. If you were to toss huge pieces of scrap metal into the shredder, it would jam and break. The shearing process prepares the metal for shredding.
Next, ferrous scrap is separated from non-ferrous scrap. This is accomplished through the use of magnets. It can also be done using Eddy currents, high-pressure air flows, and liquid floating systems. Finally, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal is compacted into large blocks and baled.
The final step is to transport the prepared and baled scrap metal to a steel mill or similar facility. At these facilities the metal is melted down in a furnace and further processed for reuse.
